I entered both days of the St Croix AKC agility trial since it was the last trial ever to be held at the Vadnais Heights Sport Center. It was only my second trial there but the place was great. I entered Vada both days too and normally I only enter her 1 day. She had a weekend off but she still wasn’t running the best. It was still a 1 bar thing but I just felt like she wasn’t jumping well. Letty threw away a few Qs due to weaving issues again. In a Standard run she weaved beautifully but at the end of the course I got lost and stepped over and then back but it was enough for her to react and drop a bar. Would have finished her title too. Sunday I had entered Fringe in Novice Standard and Open JWW. She Qd in both runs! Her first Open Q and 2nd Novice JWW Q. Karl had already earned her NAJ and the Q in Standard.
That Monday we saw Dr Heather. Vada was a mess. Her wrist was better though. I decided to give her a long break from agility since she keeps breaking in different places. And we are doing a loading dose of Adaquan – once a week for 4 weeks then every other week then reevaluate. She’ll see Dr Julia in a few weeks. I’m comfortable with my decision but it’s really hard to be at trials and not run her. She seems ok with it though.
Did 1 day of the CACM USDAA trial. I had pulled Vada and had them give her 2 runs to my other dogs. I decided to start Seven over in Starters since he’s measured into the 18″ class. It’s only 2″ higher and he does spreads in CPE. I’ll just not do Standard or Pairs with him since they have weave poles in them. So then no whistles either. 🙂 He ended up going 3/3 that day (Gamblers, Snooker and Jumpers) and finished his Starters Jumpers title since he already had 2 Qs at 22″ from when he started. Letty ran ok. She was kind of slow in Gamblers but perked up in Jumpers. Unfortunately, the ground was hard and the dead grass was slippery and she slipped and landed on a bar in Jumpers. In Standard she turned the wrong way over a jump and I stood there like an idiot and let her back jump. She did Q in Snooker. If she had weaved for the last 7 then she would have earned a SQ too. Narc was .04 over time in Gamblers. He had 1 bar down in Jumpers as he took off too close to the jump. And he amazingly Qd in Standard! I’m still learning to run Fringe. 🙂 Our biggest problem was her going around a few jumps. She locks on to things that she thinks are on her line but are far off and I’m not used to that. But that was our only bobble in Jumpers. I think I’m still doing well preserving her start line and contacts. The downside of the day was that we had a huge down pouring rain in the middle of the day. I think my brain was shot after that. My tent is only meant for shade and the dogs had standing water in their crates. I had to move them to the van and then air out everything. It did soften up the ground nicely and the standing water drained quickly.
Last weekend we went to Canada for a USDAA trial. I drove up on Friday. Pretty drive but it was grey and cloudy all day.
I got to the campsite and it was misting. Awesome campground. Awesome campsite. It was cool all weekend which was just fine. I brought a heater and ran it on low but I didn’t really get freezing cold. The weekend went fast though. After I got setup on Friday I walked the girls around the campground to check out the place. We got to bed at a decent time.
Saturday was misting all day. It took Letty a run or two to adjust to the wet grass. She mostly ran really well. My timing was off to get to the closing in Gamblers but she sent to the tunnel nicely. She just had 1 bar down in Standard.
She was the only dog in Masters and P3 Jumpers to qualify! It was a twisty turny course.
I screwed up in Snooker and she dropped #2 in the closing. Threw away the SQ. Ugh! Saturday night we had a gathering at a campsite for dinner with some of the camping folks from the trial. MN folks and Canadians. It was fun. I left in time to walk the girls on the walking trail.
We found a small lake to swim and Letty found a tennis ball there so they got to really swim.
I found wifi too and was trying to catch up on email so I got to bed too late Saturday night and didn’t sleep well. Sunday we didn’t have a single Q. It was pouring in the morning. I left my tent setup in the hopes that it would stop raining and dry out. I setup my stuff at the trial but after awhile the dogs were getting wet so I put them in the van.
Our first run was Pairs. The other dog had an off course but once I got Letty’s attention back on me she ran awesome. I was proud of her. In Standard it was jump to weaves and she messed up her weaves again. I had her redo them since she missed the entry. She did not have a good attitude the rest of the run but it was clean. In Gamblers for a second I thought she was going to get on the dogwalk but then she came off. So I crossed the line and showed her what I wanted. And in Snooker I screwed up my handling in the opening and she back jumped a color. Another SQ thrown away. Both days none of the big performance dogs qualified. Saturday I ran Miss M in P3 Standard but I forgot her weave cue and we got a refusal there. I got sad walking the course since it would have been Vada’s course to run. The rain stopped and I packed up my stuff. As soon as my Snooker run was over, I loaded up everything and went to the campground to pack up the tent. I was on the road home by 2pm. It is supposed to be a 7 hour drive. With detours and stops it ended up being more like 8. So I was home by 10pm. The drive home was beautiful. Sunny blue skies with lots of white fluffy clouds and green fields. Next year I’d like to go up earlier to have time to relax and hike and enjoy the campground. I’d probably stay and drive home on Monday too. We’ll see where the dogs are at next year. The trial was super small. Lots of fun though.
Had dinner with Cortney and Gina last night. It’s been a very long time. It was so nice to see them again. We chatted for 4 hours!
Tonight Vada is doing the Advanced Canine Good Citizen test. Tomorrow we’ll go back to obedience class to work on Utility skills and Letty will start a Canine Good Citizen class. The class ends with the test. We need to work more on the tie out and mostly on the sitting for petting and grooming.
We keep training away towards Letty’s BH. We’re making good progress!
